Research and Education
Foundation Presents New Strategic Plan
by Nicole Allcock, MSHP R&E Foundation Executive Director
The Missouri Society of Health-System Pharmacists Research and
Education Foundation has a rich history of providing awards,
recognizing pharmacist leaders and planning educational programming
for the Society.
The Garrison award, established in 1985 and named after Thomas
Garrison, is presented each year in which a deserving candidate has
been nominated. Awardees are recognized for sustained contributions
in multiple areas including:
• Outstanding accomplishment in the practice of health-system
pharmacy;
• Outstanding poster or spoken presentation at a state or
national meeting;
• Publication in a nationally recognized pharmacy or medical
journal;
• Demonstrated activity with pharmacy students from St. Louis or
the UMKC Schools of Pharmacy;
• Development of an innovative service in a health-system
pharmacy in either education, administration, clinical service,
or distribution;
• Contributions to the profession through service to ASHP, MSHP
and/or local affiliates.
If you would like to nominate a colleague for the Garrison award,
please contact the MSHP office.
In addition to the Garrison award, the Research and Education
Foundation sponsors the poster session at the MSHP Spring Meeting
and presents cash awards to students and pharmacists for best
original poster. The Foundation also provides monies to the student
Clinical Skills Competition winners from both the St. Louis College
of Pharmacy and the UMKC School of Pharmacy. The funding helps to
offset their cost of competing at the national competition during
the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.
Recently, the MSHP Research and Education Foundation’s Board of
Directors created a new strategic plan. The Foundation’s new mission
is simply to advance the practice of pharmacy through research and
education. The strategic plan includes continuing all of the
previously mentioned recognition programs and awards. In addition,
several new programs will be rolled out over the next five years.
The Foundation plans to provide more information regarding its
activities to MSHP members on a regular basis, so you can expect to
see emails and additional newsletter articles. The Foundation will
also roll out new recognition programs and awards for students, new
practitioners and pharmacists. In addition, within three years, the
Foundation will award at least one grant for research. These
projects will be first priority. However, if funds allow, the
Foundation anticipates sponsoring internships or traineeships,
additional research grants, and innovative educational programs.
The Foundation seeks opportunities for external funding. However,
the goals outlined in the new strategic plan cannot be obtained
without the support of MSHP members. Therefore, the Foundation has
set a goal of increasing its total assets by approximately six fold
over the next five years, and achieving a member donation rate of
100 %. Achieving these goals will help the Foundation show industry
and other commercial funding agencies that Missouri pharmacists are
committed to research and education.
The MSHP Research and Education Foundation has provided valuable
programs and awards in the past, and has lofty goals for the future.
Hopefully, as and MSHP member, you will consider investing in the
future of health-system pharmacy in Missouri by donating to the
Foundation. To make a donation you can contribute online
here; or call the
MSHP office at (815) 227-9292.
